关于举办英国哈斯菲尔德大学许志杰教授 学术讲座的通知

    报告题目:History and Emerging Trends in Visual Computing
    报告摘要:It is a myth that the term visual computing is a relative newly coined one while the research into image processing, computer graphics, vision systems and even visual pattern analysis through machine learning have been research fertile grounds for decades. One explanation to this is the recent recognition, indeed a trend, to harness the fundamental synergies between human biological vision and cognitive functions with the technologies and demands from big data, intelligent robotics, virtual and augmented reality, high performance computing and network, as well as artificial intelligence. For example, cognitive science is the interdisciplinary scientific study of the mind and its processes, from the formulation of intelligence to guiding behaviors, with a focus on how nervous systems represent, process, and transform information. Mental faculties of concern to cognitive scientists include language, perception, memory, attention, reasoning, and emotion. The fundamental concept of cognitive science is that thinking can best be understood in terms of representational structures in the mind and computational procedures that operate on those structures. In this sense, visual computing is not mere bundling of its supportive and sub disciplines – for example, VR and AR are often labelled as just displaying technologies and mobile solutions - but the next step towards the hybrid theoretical underpinnings and integrative systems fit for real world applications. This talk aims to clarify global trends in visual and immersive computing with the focus casted on key theories of visual computing, advances in the domain such as brain-computer interaction, virtual reality and augmented holography, and user-level practices such as in data visualization, digital heritage, robotics and multi-modal human computer interactions.
    报告人简介:Dr. Zhijie Xu came to UK in 1995 after working for 4 years as an Electronics Engineer in a major Chinese Electrical and Machinery Company - HH Yellow River Ltd. He received a first class BEng Degree from the Xian University of Mining Technology in China at 1991. After arriving at UK, he spent his first 12 months working as a visiting scholar at the University of Derby on an industrial robotics program and developed an intelligent trajectory planning system. The system (based on a PUMA and a Hitachi robot) has been demonstrated to important visitors at time, including Royal dignitaries and leading industrialists. He then started pursuing his PhD degree in 1996 at the University of Derby on the subject of Virtual Reality and Manufacturing Simulations. He received his doctor title in 2000 - 12 month after being employed as a lecturer by the then School of Engineering at the University of Huddersfield.Dr. Xu's research has mainly been focused on the areas of Virtual Reality (VR), Vision and Visualization, Software Engineering and Web-based e-Technologies. He has published 70 international journal and referenced conference papers as well as edited 4 books since 1996. His original work in VR for manufacturing simulation has contributed to the advancement of the domain knowledge and has been highly regarded by peer researchers in this specialized field. In January 2000, Dr. Xu was invited to deliver a keynote speech on Virtual Manufacturing in the International Symposium of "High-Tech for the New Millennium" at QingDao City. The event was sponsored by the China Office of the British Council. In February 2003, he delivered an IET (then IEE) research seminar with participants coming from both academia and industry.Dr.Xu is the Co-chair of the 17th International Conference on Automation and Computing (ICAC'11, ISBN: 978-1-86218-09807) and served as session chairs for many research conferences. He is also an appointed reviewer for the prestigious research journals such as the International Journal of Production Research, Signal Processing, and the International Journal of Concurrent Engineering: Research and Applications (CERA). He is also an editorial member for the International Journal of Internet Manufacturing and Services.
